Mr David Low is a thoracic and general surgeon at the Specialist Centre Ballarat
Mr David Low is a specialist thoracic and general surgeon who is dedicated to providing excellent, equitable and accessible surgery services to regional Australia.
He graduated from the University of Queensland in 2009 and spent most of his early surgical training at Ballarat Base Hospital. Falling in love with Ballarat, he then elected to complete his Advanced General Surgery training within the Southwest Victorian Regional Hub.
On completion of his General Surgical Fellowship, David then saw a need to provide specialist thoracic surgical services to our region and therefore completed a further 4 years of Specialist Thoracic Surgery Fellowship. Spending 18 months at Royal Darwin Hospital, he gained a deeper understanding in managing complex regional and rural surgical conditions as well as resource and systems management in the vastness of the Northern Territory.
Upon his return to Victoria, David was then awarded the Johnson & Johnson Thoracic Surgery Scholarship to further advance his fellowship training at the Royal Melbourne and Peter MacCallum hospitals. Together, these two centres provide some of the largest volume thoracic surgery in the country. Upon completion of his fellowship years, David returned to Ballarat, his home since 2010, to continue his practice in thoracic and general surgery.
David’s belief in lifelong learning is reflected by his further continuous upskilling, bringing new services such as Endobronchial Ultrasound Biopsy (EBUS) and Robotic Thoracic Surgery to Ballarat.
David is the Thoracic Surgery Lead for lung cancer at Grampians Health. He is part of the Grampians Rapid Access Lung Lesion service and Thoracic Multidisciplinary Meeting which is a multidisciplinary team that deals with complex thoracic oncological conditions. He is also the lead for thoracic surgery emergencies for Grampians Health.
David continues to provide general surgical services by being actively involved as one of the senior members of the Acute Surgery Unit at Grampians Health, dealing with complex general surgical conditions. He consults on the Upper Gastrointestinal Unit at Grampians Health. His belief in providing rural access is further reflected by his regional outreach surgical service in Ararat twice a month. He also practices at St John of God Hospital Ballarat.
David offers advanced minimally invasive procedures in general surgery and thoracic surgery. These include robotic lobectomy and lung sparing segmentectomy, robotic thymectomy, VATS lung resection, VATS decortication, pleurodesis, lung and pleural biopsies, surgical stabilization of rib fractures, bronchoscopy and endobronchial ultrasound. Within the area of general surgery, he performs endoscopies, hernia repair, bowel and colonic surgery, cholecystectomy and excision of skin lesions.
