Mr Daniel Wong General Surgeon Ballarat, Victoria.

Mr Daniel Wong General Surgeon Ballarat, Victoria.

Daniel is Australian trained in a full range of general surgical procedures, utilising open and advanced laparoscopic (keyhole) techniques.  He performs over 400 hernia repairs a year, most of these as day case procedures, with patients returning to their work and fitness routine within only a few days.

Raised in Melbourne, Daniel graduated with a medical degree from Monash University in 2000, then undertook postgraduate training at Eastern Health and Austin Health before completing advanced surgical training at the Royal Melbourne Hospital and Western Health.  He became a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2010 then underwent further post-fellowship training at Northern Health, consolidating skills in colorectal, breast and thyroid surgery.  Daniel subsequently collaborated with expert international mentors to gain extensive experience in the field of abdominal wall reconstruction.

With a special interest in complex hernia surgery, Daniel has undertaken advanced courses around Australia, as well as in the UK and USA.  He is well recognised in the repair of complex, large and recurrent hernias, performing these laparoscopically, open or as a hybrid of these two techniques, achieving the best possible outcomes through his meticulous approach, utilising the most up to date evidence.  He leads the complex hernia clinic at Grampians Health, and is passionate about optimising the health of his hernia patients preoperatively - not just reconstructing their abdominal walls but reconstructing their lives - the most rewarding part of his practice.  Daniel attends international hernia conferences and workshops annually to remain up to date in the field. In 2024, he commenced training to incorporate robotic surgery into his hernia practice.

Daniel also enjoys less complex surgery such as skin lesions, “lumps and bumps”, and a wide range of other general surgical procedures, including gallbladder and skin cancer surgery. With a background in art and graphic design, having an eye for detail, combined with four years of training under the auspices of plastic surgeons, Daniel is comfortable with local flap reconstruction of the face, and also performs abdominoplasty for suitable patients at the time of hernia repair.

He is also fully accredited by the Conjoint Committee to perform gastroscopy and colonoscopy, and has fulfilled strict recertification requirements.

Daniel holds consultant surgeon positions at Ballarat Health Services and St John of God Hospital Ballarat and is Director of Surgery at Maryborough Hospital and the Supervisor of Surgical Interns there. He is also actively involved in the education of trainee surgeons and served as the Supervisor of Surgical Training in Ballarat for nine years.
