Mr Bruce Stewart, Colorectal & General Surgeon

Mr Bruce Stewart is a specialist general surgeon with interests in both colorectal and thoracic surgery.
Mr Stewart was raised and schooled in the Wimmera and undertook medical training at Melbourne University before training in surgery at the Royal Melbourne Hospital.
He undertook post fellowship training in colorectal surgery at St Vincent’s hospital in Melbourne and at The Royal Brisbane Hospital, attaining full membership of the Colorectal Surgical Society of Australia and New Zealand (CSSANZ). He then embarked on a life changing trip to Africa where he trained in thoracic and trauma surgery at Baragwanath hospital in South Africa before returning to Ballarat in 1998.
He has a special interest in minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery for bowel operations, hernia repair and thoracic surgery and has performed over 5000 laparoscopic (“key hole”) procedures. He also performs a full range of endoscopy including gastroscopy, bronchosocopy, colonoscopy and capsule endoscopy.
He has appointments at St John of God Hospital, Ballarat Base Hospital and Ballarat Day Procedure Centre, and provides a surgical service at Maryborough District hospital once per month.
Mr Stewart is a member of the Colorectal Surgical Society of Australia and New Zealand and the thoracic section of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. His endoscopy practise is fully accredited with the conjoint committee for endoscopy and he has undergone colonoscopy recertification. He is an active participant in continuing professional development and has introduced numerous innovative surgical techniques to Ballarat over his 20-year surgical career.
He is also heavily involved in medical student teaching and has a formal appointment as a senior lecturer at Melbourne University. He was the supervisor of surgical training at Ballarat for 10 years and was instrumental in the establishment of the South West Regional surgical training hub.
He is a founding member of the Specialist Centre Ballarat which commenced in 2004 and is a keen supporter of Springbank and Essendon football clubs. He has four children and a farm that occupy his leisure time and help renew his enthusiasm for work.
