At the Specialist Centre Ballarat, our Upper Gastrointestinal surgeons manage patients with disorders of the upper gastrointestinal tract and are often involved in the investigation and surgical management (if required) of gastrointestinal bleeding, abdominal pain, & difficulty swallowing. Upper Gastrointestinal surgery increasingly uses minimally invasive laparoscopic techniques for often complex operations. Minimally invasive operations can now often be performed with minimal scarring and increased recovery time.

Upper GI Surgery is focused on the upper gastrointestinal tract including the oesophagus, the stomach, duodenum, small bowel, pancreas, liver and gallbladder/biliary tree. Medical conditions of the upper gastrointestinal tract may include:

  • Peptic ulcer disease

  • Gastro-oesophageal reflux

  • Tumours, benign and malignant of the upper gastrointestinal tract

  • Strictures of the upper GI tract

  • Foreign bodies in the GI tract

  • Bleeding of the upper Gi tract

  • Liver disease
