Pelvic Floor Conditions & Surgery
Pelvic floor conditions can cause problems that range from mild inconvenience through to debilitating symptoms. These symptoms are often, but not always, suffered by women, and are often suffered in silence, not knowing who to seek help from. Our colorectal surgeons are experienced in managing a range of pelvic floor conditions, including faecal incontinence, rectal prolapse, obstructive defecation (difficulty evacuating stool), and obstetric injuries to the anal sphincter.
We offer sensitivity in medical history taking, examination and investigation. We have an on-site anorectal physiology lab that allows us to perform endoanal ultrasound to assess the anal sphincters and manometry which tests rectal pressures and capacity. These tests allow us to tailor treatment strategies to the individual. Our practice nurse Bernie runs our lab and offers a warm, caring presence during your examination.
Our colorectal surgeons work closely with gynaecologists, urologists and pelvic floor physiotherapists in Ballarat and other surrounding areas to provide you with holist pelvic floor care. Where appropriate, we offer a breadth of pelvic floor surgeries including laparoscopic ventral rectopexy (keyhole surgery to repair rectal prolapse), sacral nerve modulation to improve anal function, and an array of transanal approaches to improve anorectal function and restore your quality of life.
Sacral Nerve Neuromodulation Therapy
Sacral Nerve Neuromodulation Therapy (also known as Sacral Nerve Stimulation or SNS) refers to a small implantable device, similar to a pacemaker, that can help patients with bowel or bladder control problems.
